Numerical and Experimental Investigation on the Self-Healing Potential of Interpenetrating Metal–Ceramic Composites

This study investigates the potential and feasibility of self-healing in an interpenetrating metal ceramic composite (IMCC). The cracks in the damaged composite are filled and closed by a liquid metal alloy when heated, reducing stress concentrations and improving mechanical properties compared to the predamaged composite. Numerical models are used to analyze stress concentrations and the restoration of mechanical properties, while experimental testing demonstrates the potential for self-healing in the IMCC. Although the experimental self-healing is currently only moderately feasible, the study highlights the potential for extending the service life of IMCC engineering components through further development of the self-healing approach.

Competing Effects of Radio Frequency Fields on Carbon Nanotube/Resin Systems: Alignment versus Heating

This research demonstrates that radio-frequency fields can be used to align carbon nanotubes dispersed in a resin and induce curing. The study computed the timescales and temperatures required for alignment and curing, and successfully created composites with aligned nanotubes. These composites had higher electrical conductivity and mechanical properties compared to randomly aligned samples. Additionally, the researchers showed how this method can be used in combination with additive manufacturing to achieve alignment in any desired direction.

Dynamically Tunable Optical Cavities with Embedded Nematic Liquid Crystalline Networks

The abstract describes a novel approach to dynamically control light using a tunable metal-insulator-metal (MIM) Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavity with solid-state temperature-responsive optical coatings based on a monodomain nematic liquid crystalline network. The proposed mechanism offers large, reversible, and highly linear spectral tuning of optical resonances, enabling reversible switching between reflective and absorbing states over the entire visible and near-infrared spectral regions with high modulation efficiency.
