Reduction of Battery Life Deterioration Using Fast Charging Algorithms for Hybrid Electric Vehicles
Abstract
The prevalence of petroleum-based transportation has resulted in negative consequences, prompting a shift towards electric vehicles. As a result, various technical issues have arisen, including the development and implementation of fast charging technology to decrease the battery charging time of electric vehicles to 5-10 minutes, comparable to gasoline-powered cars. With the rising popularity of electric cars, there is an increasing need for charging infrastructure. Although still in development, extreme fast charging technology has the potential to provide equivalent charging conditions as gasoline cars by operating the battery in a charge-depleting mode and replenishing it with an external power source. By exceeding the recommended charging rate, fast charging of the traction battery can be achieved, with the charging voltage being determined by the internal resistance of the battery and charging current. This resistance can be predicted dynamically to allow for maximum charging voltage, and charging can be halted based on voltage, temperature, state of charge, or time. This article outlines the current trends in fast charging algorithms for electric vehicle batteries.
