High-Capacity Battery Technology
Abstract
Developing mobile energy storage systems based on lithium-ion cell technology is a highly multidisciplinary engineering activity. This chapter starts by describing the fundamentals of different cell types and characteristics, followed by evaluation of performance and its impact on design. It examines electrochemical choices in the battery management system, addresses mechanical design requirements, provides an in-depth review of different pack design strategies, and concludes with fire propagation countermeasures. Throughout the subsections, special attention is given to design choices with respect to safety consequences. The chapter differentiates between different cell formats and their characteristics, and distinguishes the different types of cell chemistries and their applications in vehicles. When designing battery modules for automotive applications, engineers must consider several factors. Of crucial importance cascading down the pack level performance to the module. This will determine the voltage, capacity, and mechanical envelope necessary.
